After the second round of the African qualifiers for the FIFA world cup Qatar 2022 which ended Tuesday, ten teams have qualified for the final round scheduled for March next year, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) confirmed Wednesday.
The ten teams include Algeria, Tunisia, Nigeria, Cameroon, and Mali. The rest are Egypt, Ghana, Senegal, Morocco, and DR Congo.
Algeria came up tops in Group A on 14 points, two more than second-placed Burkina Faso. The African champions won four games and drew two scoring 25 goals throughout the world cup qualifiers.
The Carthage Eagles of Tunisia leaped Equatorial Guinea to finish top of Group B with 13 points from four wins and a draw.
In Group C, the Super Eagles of Nigeria emerged winners with 13 points, two more than Cape Verde, who came second. Nigeria won four matches, drew one, and lost one.
Having won five games out of six with 15 points, the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon topped Group D ahead of Cote d’Ivoire who obtained 13 points.
Without conceding a single goal in the world cup qualifiers, the Eagles of Mali topped Group E with 16 points, winning five matches and a draw.
With an unbeaten record throughout the African world cup qualifiers, the Pharaohs of Egypt emerged winners of Group F with 14 points ahead of Gabon who managed to finish second with seven points. The seven-time African champions won four matches with two draws.
The sole ticket for Group G was fought till the last round of matches with the Black Stars of Ghana emerging as eventual winners. Both Ghana and South Africa were tied on 13 points from four wins, a draw, and a defeat for each. The Black Stars however scored a goal more to win the group to play in next year’s playoffs.
The first team on the continent to book a place in the play-offs is the Teranga Lions of Senegal. The West African country won five games and drew one to top Group H on 16 points, eight more than second-placed Togo.
With a 100 percent record, the Atlas Lions of Morocco won all six games to finish on 18 points in Group I.
Finally, the Leopards of the Democratic Republic of Congo won Group J with 11 points, one more than Benin to qualify for the play-offs. DR Congo won three games, drew two, and lost one throughout the qualifiers.
The ten teams, according to CAF will be drawn in five play-off fixtures to determine the five that will represent the African continent in the 2022 FIFA world cup in Qatar. Enditem
