Cameroon arrests soldiers for killing nine civilians in restive Anglophone region

Four Cameroonian soldiers have been arrested for their role in a deadly attack on civilians in a village in the English-speaking region of Northwest where the military is fighting a separatist insurgency, army spokesman Cyrille Serge Atonfack Guemo said Tuesday.

The soldiers were on a mission to search for a missing comrade last week when they met “deviant” villagers during a night patrol in Missong locality in Menchum division of the region, Guemo said in a statement.

He said, the soldiers, in a “hasty” reaction opened fire after the villagers refused to cooperate with them, killing four women, four men and an 18-month-old baby girl. A 12-month-old girl was also slightly injured.

“The Minister Delegate at the Presidency in charge of Defense deeply regrets this serious and unfortunate incident and extends his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families,” Guemo said.

The four soldiers have been demobilized, withdrawn from the area and placed under arrest, he added.

Cameroon’s army has since 2017 been fighting English-speaking militias seeking to form a breakaway state they call “Ambazonia.” Enditem
