Horace Ekow Ewusi, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate for Cape Coast North, has formally petitioned President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to remove Professor Harold S. Amonoo-Kuofi from his position as Chairman of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) Governing Council.
In his petition, Ewusi argues that Professor Amonoo-Kuofi’s actions disrupt the smooth operation of the University and pursue a personal agenda detrimental to the institution’s collective interests.
He asserts that previous efforts by community leaders, including himself, to address the issues with Amonoo-Kuofi’s conduct have been unsuccessful.
“I respectfully bring to your attention Prof. Harold S. Amonoo-Kuofi’s troubling behaviour, which is adversely affecting the governance of the University of Cape Coast,” Ewusi stated in the petition.
“I request your esteemed office to investigate this matter and consider his removal.”
Ewusi accused the chairman of exhibiting autocratic tendencies, citing instances where Amonoo-Kuofi made unilateral decisions without consulting other members of the Governing Council.
“He lacks a fundamental understanding of corporate governance principles and has acted as if he were an executive chairman, disregarding the input of other Council members,” Ewusi said.
The petition also highlights conflicts between Amonoo-Kuofi and key university bodies, including the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) and the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA), and with the University’s convocation board.
Ewusi has included copies of correspondence from Amonoo-Kuofi to these bodies as evidence.
Additionally, Ewusi criticized Amonoo-Kuofi for consistently attacking UCC’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong, which he claims has created tension and division within the university community.
“The attacks on Prof. Boampong have caused significant unrest among faculty and staff, impacting the university’s reputation and our party’s base,” Ewusi added.
On August 2, 2024, Professor Amonoo-Kuofi issued a notice announcing the termination of Professor Boampong’s appointment as Vice-Chancellor, further intensifying the ongoing controversy surrounding his leadership.
