A deadly car bomb exploded outside a popular cafe in Mogadishu, Somalia’s capital, killing at least nine people and injuring several others who were gathered to watch the Euro 2024 football final on TV, government officials reported.

The militant group al-Shabab, linked to al-Qaeda, claimed responsibility for the attack through an affiliated radio station. The bombing targeted a venue known for gathering security personnel and government workers at night, according to Mohamed Yusuf from the National Security Agency.

Initially, authorities reported five deaths, but Mohamed Yusuf confirmed on Monday that the toll had risen to nine fatalities, with 20 others wounded in the explosion.

The blast caused extensive damage, destroying ten cars and several nearby buildings in a heavily guarded area near the presidential palace. Witnesses described a scene of chaos, with many patrons escaping through the backside perimeter wall using ladders.

Despite ongoing efforts by government forces and international allies, including African Union troops and US airstrikes, al-Shabab continues to carry out attacks aimed at destabilizing the fragile central government in Mogadishu. The group has been active for more than 17 years, launching frequent bombings and assaults across Somalia.

Amid setbacks in recent months, including territorial gains claimed by al-Shabab, Somalia has urged the African Union to delay the withdrawal of its peacekeeping forces from the country. The AU mission, known as ATMIS, has been instrumental in supporting Somali security forces against militant groups.

UN resolutions had mandated a complete withdrawal of ATMIS troops by December 31. Still, Somalia requested a phased reduction, initially suggesting a slower withdrawal to maintain security stability.
