Lawrence Carl Lokko, former coach of Richard Commey, the new International Boxing Federation (IBF) Lightweight World Champion, has said, there is nothing wrong with his former ward fighting Ukranian Vasyl Lomachenko in April.

Commey (28-2,25 KOs) recorded a stoppage victory in the second round over Isa Chaniev (13-2, 6 Kos) on Saturday in Frisco, Texas, United States of America (USA), to pick the vacant IBF lightweight title and now become an opponent for the unified champion Vasyl Lomachenko.

Lomachenko, is the reigning World Boxing Organisation (WBO) and World Boxing Association (WBA) Lightweight World title holder and has been billed to meet in a unification fight with the victor of the IBF World title (barley nine weeks after).

There have been some consternation after Commey’s victory, which makes him an automatic opponent.

However, Lokko, said in an interview with the GNA Sports that, there was nothing wrong for the IBF Lightweight World champion fighting in April, if he was in a good condition.

He said it was every boxers to dream to become a world champion and this presented an opportunity for Commey to unify the WBA,WBO and IBF titles, which he would relish.

“I cannot say it is too early for him to defend his title and possibly add more. They (his camp) know what is going on in camp and normally it is about the health of the boxer that matters most, so if he is ok after the fight then there is no problem for him to fight,” he said.

“Also, he didn’t have much to do in the bout because he finished his opponent in the second round of a 12 round fight.

“It is every boxers dream to be a world champion and that would make Ghana proud. I believe he can still do something. If the April fight would happen then it is going to be a unification fight and he has the chance to unify the belts which is still possible.”
