Cattle diseases break out in western Zambia, kills 122 animals

At least 122 cattle have died in western Zambia following an outbreak of two diseases in the province, state-run news agency reported on Monday.


At least 109 cattle have died of black leg disease in Sikongo district of the province while 13 others have died from foot and mouth disease in Shangombo district.


Poniso Njeulu, Western Province Minister, revealed the outbreak of the diseases when the country’s Vice-President Inonge Wina visited the provincial capital, Mongu on Sunday, according to the Zambia News and Information Service (ZANIS).

Meanwhile, the Zambian vice-president has described the outbreak as disheartening and an emergency which needed quick intervention.

She has since called veterinary officials to respond to the situation as soon as possible in order to control the outbreak, adding that the province had high poverty levels and that most people in the province depended on livestock for sustainability. Enditem
