Since the introduction of new media better known as social media every industry including the art industry have benefited. In Africa Ghana to be specific, celebrities and public figures have had a turn around in their careers with the help of this game changer.
Before the inception of this technology what was know to the entertainment industry was the traditional media, which comprises of the electronic and the print media. Although new media has not faced off the traditional media completely it is speedily gaining grounds especially among the youth and young adults.
Gone were the days where entertainers solely depended on traditional media for publicity but now this technology has given these celebrities the leverage to interact with their fans, grow their numbers, publicize their events and build their brands in the process.
Some celebrities have seen the opportunities that lie in this inventory, not only have they spotted the opportunities they are using it as a prospecting tool.
A good example of a celebrity who uses social media to propagate his works is Ghanaian movie star John Dumelo, with about 2 million followers just on Facebook the actor has been able to use his social media platforms to connect better with his fans. Through social media John Dumelo has been able to stay relevant in the industry because he uses the medium to comment on social issues which keeps him in the news.
Sarkodie is another musician who is making good use of this beautiful technology. Through social media, the self acclaimed rap king has built a strong personal relationship with his fans and from time to time he establishes conversation with them. His social media accounts also serve as free advertisement platforms for him.
Yvonne Nelson is no exception, she is not just active on social media but this technology serves as a prospecting tool for her as an actress. Somewhere in 2015 she organized a vigil which trended hugely on twitter.
Next name to mention is Shattta Wale, this Dancehall artiste has gained a lot from social media. While his career was in hibernation, he spent time marketing his music and constantly engaging his fans on Facebook. This strategy forms part of the reason why he has been able to relaunch his career successfully.
Sonnie Badu, Joe Mettle and Gifty Osei can not be exempted from this list, these gospel musicians are taking their music career and brand awareness to a new level with the help of new media.
Lydia Forson, Debora Vanessa, Stonebwoy, FOKN Bois, DKB, Funny Face, Mzvee, Mzbel, and Iwan are also doing a great job with their social media interactions. All these names mentioned here have one way or the other understood the essence of new media and are dong well in their field of endeavours with the help of this technology.
