Education authorities in central Mozambique said on Thursday that they are in need of 54,000 school desks for some 100,000 pupils in the province of Sofala, according to the national radio station RM’s report.

“We have pupils sitting on the floor and others using improvised seats supported by the communities at the district level,” Texeira Basilio, head of the Studies and Planning in the Provincial Directorate of Education and Human Development told RM on Thursday.

Basilio said they always have this kind of support from the community but the situation has gotten worse due to the cyclone Idai last year that destroyed thousands of classrooms and facilities.

The government is currently working through several platforms to allocate more funds and provide this important resource for learning process, said Baisilio. Enditem
