The Central Regional Branch of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has intensified the education of clients on NHIS and Ghana Card linkage processes to increase awareness among the populace.

That would support the government digitization agenda of bringing efficiency and convenience to the Public.

The emphasis on linking the NHIA card to the Ghana card was to ensure that there were proper preventive services and screening to the benefits of the scheme.

Mr Fred Appiah, the Regional Director of NHIA revealed that in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) as part of the week NHIA celebration across the country.

He said the celebration was to increase active membership of the scheme, educate public on the benefits and processes of linking NHIS and Ghana Card in accessing health care services.

Also, Mr Appiah said the celebration would deepen awareness and knowledge of the NHIS benefits packages and highlight the adverse effects of providers charging NHIS members unauthorized fees at service delivery points.

He indicated that anyone who registered his or her NHIA card within the week irrespective of how long that person had been away would get instant access to health insurance.

The Regional Director, therefore, encouraged Ghanaians to use the week as an opportunity to re-register their cards via their mobile phones, saying it was easy and simple to do the renewal on your phone.

He said the objective was to achieve 80 per cent coverage and called on all stakeholders to support the efforts, stressing that the NHIA system was strong enough to deal with the numbers.

The Regional Director recounted the innovations introduced by NHIA, which included mobile renewal registration and mass mobilization campaign which also saw the linkage of the NHIS card with the Ghana Card.

According to him, more strategies for increasing membership were underway and that the NHIS had a comprehensive benefits package that covered curative services for over 90 per cent of diverse conditions in the country.

“To augment this, the NHIA has introduced medication for the treatment of breast cancer on its medicine list. This move seeks to reduce the disease burden of breast cancer and improve the reproductive health of NHIS members.

Adding that childhood cancers, as well as family planning, were covered by the NHIA.

He said those who had challenges linking up the cards were supported at the District offices of the NHIA in the Region, “Our systems are updated such that if you have challenges linking on your mobile phone, then you visit our offices for support.”

Mr Appiah said if both cards were successfully linked, it would reduce the cost of production of NHIS cards and also enable the citizenry to access health services on one card.

He explained that as the Ghana Card was not exactly the same as the NHIS card, there were little changes in the way claims were processed, and said owing to the changes, health care facilities were trained on how to use the Ghana Card to process their claims.

Mr Appiah disclosed that the NHIA was constructing six new offices within the Region to aid in public access to their services.

The projects had been embarked in Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem (KEEA) municipality, Cape Coast Metropolis, Afransi in the Gomoa East district, Abura- Asebu-Kwamankese(AAK) district and Kasoa in the Awutu Senya district.
Mr Appiah disclosed that a total number of 1,130,139 in September this year active membership has been recorded as against 1,335,414 annual target of 2021.

The number represent 83.63 percent out of the total annual target of the Region.
