Chile’s Health Ministry on Wednesday confirmed that a third patient of COVID-19 has died as the total number of infections climbs to 1,142.

The latest fatal victim was 82 years old and suffered from cancer.

Some 220 new infections were reported in the past 24 hours, the biggest daily jump in cases since authorities began to publicly track the spread of the epidemic.

So far, 22 people infected with the virus have recovered, according to the ministry.

The majority of infections concentrated in the capital Santiago and its metropolitan area, with a total of 682 cases.

Last week, Chile declared a 90-day state of catastrophe to impose more measures to contain the epidemic, including a nationwide curfew from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., closing its borders to visitors, and making it mandatory for returning nationals and resident foreigners to commit themselves to a two-week quarantine.
