In addition, the Chinese Embassy in Namibia will also treat the elderly to an end-of-year function.
The donation worth 500,000 Namibian dollars (32,770 U.S. dollars) was handed over on Wednesday by Chinese Ambassador to Namibia Xin Shunkang.

The event was attended by deputy Prime Minister Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, who is also the international relations minister and the patron of the Tsumeb Senior Citizens fund.

Tsumeb, a small town of about 20,000 people, is in the Oshikoto region where there are about 12,000 elderly people.

Tsumeb regional councilor Lebbius Tangeni Tobias told Xinhua that those who benefited from the Chinese donation are aged above 60 years.

He also said the Tsumeb Senior Citizens Fund was created to help those who are now pensioners.

“I wish to humbly request all business people in Namibia to do the same for our senior citizens in Tsumeb,” Lebbius said, adding that donation shows the good relationship China has with Namibia.

Namibia is one of the few African countries that pay pensioners grants. Enditem
