Chinese embassy refutes Kenyan newspaper’s rumors on evacuation flight

Chinese embassy in Kenya refuted a story published on Wednesday’s Daily Nation that 200 Chinese nationals boarded a China Southern Airlines flight in Nairobi and headed to China on Tuesday night, denouncing it as fake news.

“The Embassy firmly reiterates that the reports on the Daily Nation about Chinese taking flights back are false. There is no passenger flight to China this week. The claims that 200 Chinese flew out last night via China Southern Airlines flight is totally false and based on the reporter’s imagination,” according to a statement from the Chinese embassy.

The Daily Nation, one of Kenya’s largest circulated newspaper, also published a story on June 13 that 400 Chinese nationals were preparing to leave the country the next week over fears of COVID-19, which was also rebuffed by the embassy as fake news.

China Southern Airlines also rebuked the story as groudless.

“There was no fight from Nairobi on Tuesday,” said Huang Guanwen, general manager of China Southern Airlines’ Nairobi office.

China Southern Airlines is still waiting for approval from authorities to resume the flights, said Huang.

Kenya suspended all international flights in late March due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Enditem
