Dr. Zheng Jianghua, leader of the 11-man team working at the LEKMA-China-Ghana Friendship Hospital at Teshie-Nungua, a suburb of the capital, told Xinhua here on Thursday steps needed to be taken to arrest the situation.

“During the outreach, we can find some of them suffering from, for example, high blood pressure, and some muscle pain and back pain. We can give them advice as to how to take care of themselves,” he said.

He said the situation is alarming because “the workers are young but the blood pressure is high. I think in Ghanaian people it is more popular than Chinese people. Maybe their lifestyle is different from Chinese people.”

Dr. Zheng, a general surgeon, urged intensified public education to persuade people to change their lifestyle, especially their eating habits, saying high levels of salt in Ghanaian dishes could also be part of the contributing factors.

The medical team, including nine doctors, has also been offering free health checkups to local and Chinese workers in some Chinese companies in Ghana.

The team, which is the fifth group of the Chinese medical team to Ghana, is made up of a general surgeon, cardiologist, anesthesiologist, neurologist, ophthalmologist gynecologist, orthopedist and acupuncturist.

It carried out medical checks for employees at the Sunon-Asogli Power plant operated by Shenzhen Energy Group of China, as well as the China Harbors Engineering Company (CHEC), among other Chinese firms operating in Ghana.

Dr. Lei Qiong, a gynecologist, said hypertension is also prevalent among productive Ghanaian females.

“Ghanaian women have very high risk in hypertensive disease, pre-eclampsia, eclampsia, high BP. These are very common, and some of them are not doing the routine antenatal care, so it is very dangerous,” the gynecologist said.

The gynecologist called for public education and inclusion of reproductive health education in basic and second cycle institutions to help reduce the maternal mortality among Ghanaian women. Enditem
