East China’s Jiangxi Province has donated preventative and protective equipment to Namibia’s northern Oshana regional council to curb the spread of COVID-19.

The donation included 5,000 pieces of disposable masks, 72 bottles of hand disinfectants and 500 pairs of disposable gloves.

Huang Hongtao, an official at Jiangxi Zhongmei Engineering Group., Ltd Namibia branch who represented the province, said the donation aimed to support the Oshana region in the prevention and control of COVID-19.

“Oshana region and Jiangxi province have a solid relationship, and through this donation, we hope to build on this partnership to propel our nations into success by promoting public health,” said Huang.

Elia Irimari, governor of Oshana region, commended China for the donation, adding that the donation is timely and would complement the Namibian government’s efforts in the fight against COVID-19.

The donation would also address the challenge of a lack of medical masks and other protective equipment in the country, attributed to border and importation constraints.

“This donation will make a huge difference and would be utilized, in particular by our health and security officials, who are some of the frontline workforce helping the country defeat COVID-19,” Irimari said Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Irimari noted that the current Chinese aid is also a demonstration of the solid and cordial bilateral ties.

“Jiangxi provincial government is our sister with whom we have a mutual agreement. And it is global partnerships such as this one with China that we need during challenging times as these,” he said.

Namibia so far has recorded 31 confirmed cases of COVID-19 with 17 recoveries. Enditem
