A city official was shot and killed on Monday at a municipal parking lot in Cape Town, the legislative capital of South Africa, local media reported Tuesday.

The 41-year-old woman was gunned down while sitting in her car in the parking area of the Strand municipal office building on Monday morning, according to media reports.

Strand, a seaside resort town about 50 km southeast of Cape Town city center, is part of the City of Cape Town Metropolitan Municipality in the Western Cape Province.

Reports indicated that the woman was employed as an official in the Environmental Health Department.

“It is alleged that an unknown male approached her on foot, took out two firearms, and fired several shots through the driver’s side window. The deceased was hit several times,” said provincial police spokesperson Frederick van Wyk, as quoted by local media.

According to him, the suspect then walked away, got into a car that was waiting, and drove off.

“The victim was declared deceased at the scene by medical personnel,” Van Wyk said. The motive behind the incident was still under investigation.
