The president of the Civil and Local Government Staff Association Ghana (CLOGSAG), Alhaji Mahamadu Assibi Azonko is appealing to the government of Ghana to address concerns raised by pensioners on the Three Tier Pension Scheme.
He said presidential commission on pensions to examine the issue of inadequate pension earning with the aims of improving pension income for workers.
But in 2008, with the promulgation of national pensions Act 2008 (ACT 766), the three- tier pension scheme as expected to give better pension to workers. It was widely embraced by workers due to broad consultations carried out, at the time, as well as the pension benefits it professed to give beneficiaries.
He disclose this to modernghana.online indicating that the national pension Act, 2008 (Act 766) became operational on January 1, 2010.with this the improvement in pension ere to be seen after five years, that is from January 1,2015.
Retirees were expected to enjoy monthly pension income better than hat SSNIT would have been paying under social security la 1991 (PNCL 247).
This according to Alhaji many pensioners ere rather being paid lump sum/gratuities which were less than a quarter of hat they would have earned under PNDL 247
Meanwhile the Isaac Bampoe Executive Secretary of CLOGSAG, also express to the reporter on the Numerous concerns raised by the workers in the implementation of the three tier pension scheme purported to improve and enhance pension in Ghana as well as bring an end to multiple pensions in the public service make it topical.
As part of the May Day celebration the association chose this theme ?The three Tier Pension Scheme is Kpa, Kpa ,Kpaa? because this is what most leave by including pensioners.
We ought to constantly remind ourselves that our currentconditions s of service have been attained through continuous struggle in the past and the present by various workers unions and associations. It would be self-deception if we presume that our future aspirations would be achieved on a silver platter. It is this fat that has led CLOGSAG to be concernedwith improvement in pensions for workersespecially those with the civil andlocal government services.
CLOGSAG bemoans the deplorable conditions of retired public officers and would unceasingly pursue activities to improve the lot of pensioners and those about to retire.
?It is evident that the hope for the realization of a better pension has become a mirage.? At each point in time whenworkerswant to see clear improvements in levels of pension income, their aspirations are dashed and had to wait for another long time in the future? he said.
According to Isaac Bampoe it is also regrettable that focusing on pension for the 2012 may day celebration in Ghana with all the assurance of better pension, has not hanged matters,
He said to achieve the universal application of the three tier pension scheme has virtually become an impossibility, some workers-groups have been given the opportunity to opt while others have been reverted to schemes that are akin to the cap 30.
?CLOGSAG notes that there cannot be any meaningful economic development while old age poverty persists as poverty anywhere constitutes a danger to prosperity everywhere? he said.
