The coach of the Cote d’Ivoire national team, Jean-Louis Gasset, resigned the day after his team’s heavy defeat against Equatorial Guinea (4-0) in a match counting for the 3rd day of the group stage of the 34th Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) football that Cote d’Ivoire is organizing until February 11.

According to corroborating sources reported by several media outlets, Jean-Louis Gasset resigned on Monday the same evening of a defeat which Ivorians considered a humiliation.

He submitted his resignation to the president of the Ivorian Football Federation (FIF), Idriss Diallo, who accepted it, according to the same sources.

Jean-Louis Gasset was appointed coach of Cote d’Ivoire on May 20, 2022 as a prelude to AFCON 2023.

While his contract was scheduled to be renewed if Cote d’Ivoire reached the final four, Jean-Louis Gasset was forced to resign in the face of general discontent among the population.

Winner (2-0) against Guinea Bissau in the opening match, Cote d’Ivoire was beaten by Nigeria (0-1) before falling to Equatorial Guinea (0-4).

Ranked 3rd in Group A, behind Equatorial Guinea and Nigeria, Cote d’Ivoire is not yet eliminated but can only count on the results of the matches on the last day of Groups E and F to hope to be re-drafted among the best third-placed groups for the round of 16.

Cote d’Ivoire can qualify in the event of a victory for Mali against Namibia and a victory for South Africa against Tunisia or a draw between the two countries or a victory for Morocco against Zambia.
