In a joint statement, leaders of the Initiative for Democracy in Congo and the Front for Respect of Constitutional Order and Democratic Change urged President Denis Sassou N’Guesso to meet all the preconditions unanimously set by political parties and civil society groups to guarantee peaceful elections.
The preconditions include setting up an independent electoral commission, electronic identification of voters, biometric voter’s cards, use of a single ballot paper and preparation of a reliable electoral register with support from experts from the International Organization of the Francophonie and the International Foundation for Electoral Systems.
On Dec. 23, the Congolese government decided on the use of a single ballot paper during the forthcoming presidential elections and the formation of an independent electoral commission to replace the current National Commission for Organization of Elections.
The government also announced a review of the voters’ register.
However, other issues that are meant to ensure proper organization of the elections have not yet been addressed and people are waiting to see the implementation of the government decisions concerning the electoral process. Enditem
