As Ghana prepares for the upcoming December 7 elections, the Kwahu Afram Plains North constituency has emerged as a crucial battleground influenced by local development challenges and voter priorities.

Located in the Eastern Region, Kwahu Afram Plains North faces underdevelopment, which is worsened by its geographical isolation amidst Volta Lake and scattered islands.

The constituency’s capital, Donkorkrom, is a centre for fishing and farming activities vital to the local economy.

In the 2020 elections, the constituency’s voter population was 41,765, underlining its significance in the electoral landscape.

Despite its agricultural productivity, the area must improve its infrastructure, particularly in the road networks connecting communities and providing access to essential services.

The poor condition of inner feeder roads and the neglect of crucial transportation routes remain critical concerns among constituents, affecting their electoral decisions.

Due to road challenges, local commuters heavily rely on motorized tricycles, which leads to increased transportation costs. This reflects broader issues of economic strain and high living costs in the region.

Island communities like Madagascar voice continuous neglect, with incomplete school infrastructure and inadequate social amenities underscoring their disenchantment with political promises.

Kwahu Afram Plains North has historically favoured the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) since the Fourth Republic.

However, the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) aims to capture the seat in the upcoming elections, although it faces scepticism from constituents who feel overlooked by current governance.

Incumbent MP Betty Krosby Mensah, representing the NDC, is set to defend her seat against challenges from Mr Anim Asiamah of the NPP and independent candidate Kpeli Worlase. A former NDC member, Wallace contests independently following internal party disputes.

As elections approach, local voters emphasize that candidates’ commitments to addressing infrastructure deficits and improving livelihoods will determine their choices at the ballot box.

The outcome in Kwahu Afram Plains North hinges on how effectively candidates engage with these pressing local issues and meet the expectations of their electorate.
