The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has set September 4, 2024, as the significant date for its congress.

This congress will play a crucial role in electing a flagbearer for the December 7 general elections, a decision that will shape the party’s future.

The party has been actively working to resolve internal conflicts, a testament to its commitment to unity and progress.

Two candidates have emerged: Akosua Sarpong Kumankuma, the party’s National Chairman, and Yaw Anokye Frimpong, a historian.

The party’s vetting committee has given both candidates, Akosua Sarpong Kumankuma and Yaw Anokye Frimpong, the green light, ensuring their participation in the upcoming congress.

A third potential candidate, Ivor Kwabena Greenstreet, who had previously shown interest, did not submit the necessary forms and will not contest.

The CPP’s congress will be decentralized in all 16 regional capitals nationwide.

The results will then be compiled at the party’s headquarters for final collation and announcement.

The CPP is under pressure to meet the Electoral Commission’s deadline for candidate submissions.

Some critics have attributed the delay in convening the congress to ongoing disunity within the party.

Recent internal strife has led to the resignation of several national executives, including Nana Yaa Akyempim Jantua.

Despite these challenges, the party’s election committee is optimistic. They believe that the internal issues have been resolved, and the CPP is not just moving forward, but moving forward with a renewed unity and focus, ready to compete in the December elections.
