With about 600 COVID-19 cases identified in prisons, South African Department of Correctional Services on Monday said it is working with Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) to mitigate the further spread of the virus in its facilities.
Correctional Services spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo said mass screening and testing are underway in prisons.
“We have prevention measures in place such as screening, testing and availability of PPE’s and are advising our officials on how to protect themselves,” Nxumalo said.
“Once people have tested positive, we ensure that there’s infection control.”
The department is planning to release some 19,000 inmates to deal with the pandemic in prisons.
“We are still busy with the internal processes in terms of going through the profiles, we have to follow all the parole procedures including contacting the victims,” he said. Enditem
