Côte d’Ivoire / UNOCI chief calls for republican dialogue between Ivorians
ABIDJAN, Côte d’Ivoire, March 2, 2012/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Côte d’Ivoire, Bert Koenders, on Thursday 1 March 2012 called on all Ivorian political actors to engage in a republican dialogue.
M. Koenders launched the appeal after separate meetings with members of the Ligue des Mouvements pour le Progrès (LMP – League of Movements for Progress) and the Congrès National pour la Résistance et la Démocratie (CNRD – National Congress for Resistance and Democracy)
At the headquarters of the CNRD in the Abidjan suburb of Cocody, the head of the UN Operation in Cote d’Ivoire (ONUCI) stated that only dialogue could help Côte d’Ivoire to put a definitive end to the crisis. “We believe in this dialogue and we feel that there is hope on the horizon for definitive peace in the country, » he said.
In his meeting with the LMP the head of the UN mission reiterated the need for all Ivorians to talk to one another.
While recognizing the need for dialogue, Gervais Coulibaly, coordinator of the LMP, called for the creation of conditions that make it possible. “We think it is still possible for us, together, to definitively end the crisis in Côte d’Ivoire,” he said. “We feel the unfreezing of the assets of our comrades, the release of certain of the people who are imprisoned, can help towards that.”
The LMP coordinator also stated that UNOCI could be an unavoidable partner in the search for a peaceful social environment.
