Richard Jakpa, the third accused in the ambulance trial, has raised concerns over issues within the Attorney-General’s Department following his acquittal by the Court of Appeal alongside Dr Cassiel Ato Forson.

Jakpa emphasized the need for careful selection of the Attorney General to safeguard democracy and the rule of law.

Speaking to journalists after the Court of Appeal’s decision on Tuesday, Jakpa expressed his belief that systemic issues at the Ministry of Justice and Attorney-General’s office require urgent attention from stakeholders committed to protecting the country’s democratic principles.

The Court of Appeal’s decision to overturn the High Court’s call for the defendants to open their defence, citing insufficient evidence and noting that any financial loss should be attributed to the Ministry of Health’s actions rather than the defendants’, is a significant development.

The panel of justices’ decision to acquit and discharge all accused persons involved in the 2.37 million Euro ambulance procurement case has had a profound impact on the accused.

These developments underscore the ongoing challenges and scrutiny faced by Ghana’s legal system and its enforcement agencies in handling complex financial cases, a matter of concern for all citizens.
