Court fines salesperson GH¢36,000.00 for forgery

An Accra Circuit Court has sentenced a salesperson to a fine of GH¢36,000.00 for forging a pay slip to steal GH¢28,554.00 belonging to Madam Gloria Klutse, his employer.

In default, Emmanuel Quartey Owoo would serve a five-month jail term in hard labour.

He denied forging the slip to steal the amount but was found culpable after trial.

Police Chief Inspector Benson Benneh told the Court presided over by Mrs Evelyn Asamoah that Madam Gloria, the complainant owned a shop at CMB area at the Accra Business district and Owoo was the complainant’s salesperson.

He said on October 10, 2020, Owoo was given a week’s sale amounting to GH¢28,554.00 to pay into a private account at the Zenith Bank for the supply of 500 cartons of Indomie noodles.

Chief Inspector Benneh told the Court that Owoo paid GH¢5,025.00 from other sales into the account and altered the figures on the deposit slip to GH¢28,554.00 which was presented to Madam Gloria, who forwarded the same to an agent of the company that supplied the Indomie noodles.

The prosecution said the company’s account reflected the GH¢5,025.00 Owoo paid into it, but the figure on the duplicate copy of the deposit slip was forged.

The Court heard that a formal report was lodged with the police five days later, leading to the arrest of Owoo.
In his cautioned statement, Owoo admitted paying GH¢5,025.00 into the account as well as altering the figures on the duplicate slip.

Owoo was prosecuted after investigations.
