Crisis rocking PDP takes new dimension

The crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) took a new dimension Saturday when the police deployed officers and Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) tanks to seal off the secretariat of the splinter group that broke away from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, the ?New PDP?.

Leaders and governors of the New PDP had planned to open the office located at Number 4, Oyi Street, off Ibrahim Babangida Way, Maitama District, Abuja, on Monday.

The office was undergoing final renovation touches when the police moved into seal the place. Some of the dissenting governors in the faction had visited the office on Friday to inspect the renovation work in readiness for its opening.

Coincidentally, the police action came barely a day after another round of talks on the PDP crisis between the two contending groups, brokered by PDP elders led by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, were deadlocked.

It was learnt that that government might have wielded its might in getting the police to take over the office of the ?New PDP? in a bid to prove to them that their actions would not be tolerated.

On Friday, the PDP National Chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, was reported to have said to have complained to the police about the office, which he described as ?illegal?.

On Tuesday, the PDP Chairman had said the party would resist any attempt to splinter it.

?We shall ensure that any person who is not duly elected into any leadership position in our great party and has not been duly assigned any role but goes ahead to arrogate such to himself will be made to face the full wrath of the law,? he had said.

He had also been quoted to have said that the party would recall any of its members that joined the ?New PDP?, a threat, which was quickly dismissed by the splinter group.
The sealing of the New PDP office is reminiscent of what happened in 2006 when a splinter faction from the PDP under Chief Solomon Lar and Alhaji Shuaibu Oyedokun opened a factional office in Mabushi, Abuja.  The police had moved in to cordon off the office and tear the flags of the faction hoisted there.
