While the Bank of Ghana (BoG) has made it a practice to always shoot down cryptocurrency in Ghana and warn financial institutions and the general public against it, an African cryptocurrency exchange, Quidax has named arguably the biggest music producer on the continent, Nigerian celebrity Don Jazzy as its brand Ambassador.

This comes at the time when a number of attempts by Ghanaians businessmen to introduce crypto platforms in the country has been shot down by the central bank with warnings that no such platform has been licensed and therefore any one who does business with any crypto platform does so at their own risk.

This started way back in 2018 when BoG issued a directive and caution against crypto. Four years on, there have been at least two attempts by Ghanaians to start crypto platforms bu the BoG issued separate statements shooting them down.

The first wad Freedom Coin by Kwame Bediako Cheddar, aka Freedom Jacob Caesar and then later SIDICOIN by another Ghanaian businessman. Indeed, one of Ghana’s leading dancehall artistes, Stonebwoy declared his support for SIDICOIN but later had to withdraw his support due to the Central Bank’s posture.

Meanwhile, crypto exchanges like Binance and Quidax are functioning in other African countries like Nigeria and the recent naming of Don Jazzy as the brand Ambassador for Quidax, plus Binance’s sponsorship for AFCON 2021 and for Nigerian Idol shows how welcome these platforms are elsewhere but Ghana.

At a press conference, Quidax announced that it will be collaborating with popular record producer, Micheal Collins popularly known as Don Jazzy, to drive adoption of cryptocurrency on the continent – particularly among creatives.

In line with that, Quidax launched an online campaign dubbed #TheQuidaxCall, revealing celebrities like actresses and Big Brother Naija stars Diane Russet and Bisola Aiyeola, plus popular actor Timini Egbuson and celebrity Chef, Gbubemi Fregene aka Chef Fregz as well as award-winning hip-hop artistes  M.I Abaga as brand ambassadors.

In the videos announcing the celebrities, an unknown person was seen to be making the calls to the celebrities. At the event, Don Jazzy was revealed to be the person making the calls to these celebrities.
