Esteban Lazo, president of Cuba’s National Assembly of People’s Power, or the parliament, met in Havana on Wednesday with the president of Zimbabwe’s Senate, Mabel Chinomona.
During their meeting, Lazo highlighted the deep respect and admiration that Cuba feels for African nations, “with whom the Caribbean island shares strong ties of friendship, solidarity and historical cooperation.”
Lazo thanked African countries for their support in condemning the U.S. trade embargo against Cuba at international forums.
Chinomona said her official visit to Havana had helped to highlight Cubans’ fondness for Africa and the longstanding ties between the two regions.
“Thanks to Fidel Castro’s ideas, today we have doctors and teachers in Zimbabwe who were trained in Cuba,” she said, calling Cuba “a true friend.”
Bilateral cooperation between Cuba and Zimbabwe is mainly in health and education, with more than 1,500 Zimbabwean students having graduated from Cuban universities. Enditem
