The Danish Red Cross has embarked on a cash distribution exercise to households affected by El Nino-induced floods and dry spell in Malawi’s eastern lakeshore district of Mangochi.
The organization rolled out the exercise Tuesday through the Malawi Red Cross Society and the program is to run from June to September, targeting over 700 households with each getting 29 U.S. dollars per month to maintain their livelihoods.
A sum of 109,000 U.S. dollars is expected to be distributed in the program, according to Nuria Beneitez, acting country manager for the Danish Red Cross.
She told local media that her organization’s mission is to help Malawi’s government create resilience of communities against climate shocks.
Spokesperson for the Department of Disaster Management Affairs Chipiliro Khamula told Xinhua Wednesday that the country continues to receive support from international organizations since President Lazarus Chakwera declared a state of disaster in most districts of the country in March.
Malawi still needs over 440 million dollars to assist over 2 million affected households, hence the support by the Danish Red Cross has come at an opportune time, Khamula said.
