A horrific three-vehicle crash on the Adansi-Fomena highway Tuesday afternoon left eight people dead and renewed calls for improved road safety measures.
The accident involved a Sprinter van, an intercity bus, and a Toyota Corolla near New Ayaase, according to local officials.
Eyewitness accounts from Fomena East Assembly Member Isaac Adjei describe a tragic sequence of events. The Sprinter van, traveling from Kumasi to Fosu, allegedly attempted an ill-timed overtaking maneuver of the Corolla when it collided head-on with an oncoming bus. The violent impact split the Sprinter in half, with one section catapulting off the roadway, while the Corolla was forced off the road entirely.
Emergency responders confirmed six fatalities at the scene, with two additional victims succumbing to injuries after being transported to medical facilities. The crash has reignited community concerns about dangerous driving practices along this stretch of road.
Adjei emphasized the urgent need for traffic calming measures, specifically recommending speed ramps to discourage reckless overtaking. “This tragedy was preventable,” he stated, noting similar near-misses have occurred recently. Road safety advocates point to data showing preventable collisions account for nearly 70% of Ghana’s traffic fatalities annually.
The Adansi-Fomena district has seen multiple fatal crashes this year, prompting calls for enhanced police patrols and driver education programs. As authorities investigate Tuesday’s collision, grieving families await identification of victims and clarification on what exactly led to the deadly chain reaction on this increasingly perilous roadway.
