Fast-rising rapper Emmanuel Yaw Amissah, popularly known as Debwoy Afriqa, has ignited controversy with his recent remarks advocating for the acceptance of political endorsements by musicians.
Speaking on Max Drive in Accra, the “Ohia” hitmaker argued that musicians should be free to endorse political parties as a legitimate way to monetize their craft.
Debwoy Afriqa urged Ghanaians to recognize the business aspect of the music industry, emphasizing that political endorsements are no different from any other form of partnership or employment.
He pointed out that many musicians rely on the financial rewards from political campaigns to reinvest in their music and expand their reach.
“This is pure business,” he stated. “You can’t refuse to work for someone just because of their political affiliation. Musicians should not be tagged or stigmatized for endorsing a particular party. It’s a means to earn a living.”
The rapper also expressed his willingness to support any political party willing to use his music for campaign purposes, dismissing concerns over potential backlash.
“Ghanaians will talk for a few days, and then everything will go back to normal,” he added, referencing recent incidents where fellow artists King Paluta and OliveTheBoy faced public criticism for their political affiliations.
Debwoy Afriqa, a Shydem Entertainment artist, is currently gaining recognition for his unique blend of highlife, Amapiano, and Afrobeats.
His latest single, “Dangote,” is making waves on the music scene.
His comments have sparked a wider debate about the role of musicians in politics, with some applauding his pragmatism and others warning of the potential risks of aligning with political entities in a highly polarized environment.
