The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State has expressed worry over the refusal of the Nigeria Police to arrest Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Otelemaba Dan-Amachree, despite an order by a Port Harcourt High Court that he could be arrested.
In a statement issued in Port Harcourt and signed by the media aide to the state PDP chairman, Bro. Felix Obuah, the party said its discomfort over the Police inaction on the court order is borne out of the fact that the Rivers State Government has continued to make frantic efforts aimed at frustrating series of investigations of its officials who are culpable in various crimes and offences perpetrated in course of the current crisis in the state.
The party further said the expectation was that the Commissioner of Police would act swiftly, considering the sensitivity, and seriousness of Amachee?s allegation of a grand plot to kill the Governor, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi.
It said; ?It is important that the Police refuses to yield to pressure of compromise by the Rivers State Government, as acting otherwise will further leave the people with ill feelings and lack of confidence in the activities of our Police force.
?We therefore call on the Rivers State Police Commissioner, Mr Mbu Joseph Mbu to prove his affirmation by the Inspector General of Police as a professional and non partisan police officer, by respecting the decisions of the court and acting in accordance with the law.
?He should urgently arrest and investigate the impeached Speaker, Otelemaba Amachree for raising false alarm, claiming to have uncovered plots by some persons to assassinate an eminent personality, like the Governor of Rivers State, Rt Hon Chibuike Amaechi.
?In such a serious matter as this, the people deserve to know the truth and see that the culprit(s) are punished accordingly. The only way we can get to the truth is by investigating this serious allegation so that even the Governor, whose life is said to be in danger can be at peace.?
And in a related development, Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa has said that the PDP was the only true national political party that could guarantee equal opportunity for all politicians in the country.
Dickson, who is also the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Reconciliation Committee, stated this on Tuesday in Abuja.
He spoke at the meeting with state leaders of PDP in the 13 states controlled by opposition parties.
The states include; Lagos, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Ekiti, Nasarawa, Borno, Yobe, Zamfara, Edo, Imo, Anambra and Oyo.
According to him, the PDP was the only political party that had given everyone a common political platform.
“The PDP is not a religious, regional or a minority party. In 2011, a president from the minority emerged through Jonathan courtesy of the PDP.” Dickson said.
He added that the committee was poised to completely reconcile aggrieved party members, adding that the PDP was big enough to accommodate everybody irrespective of their grievances.
Dickson urged party members to always channel their grievances through the proper party channels.
Former Deputy Senate President Ibrahim Mantu, who also spoke at the meeting, said that the PDP was poised to recapture the 13 non PDP states.
Mantu added that the issue of neglect in federal appointment as alleged by some states was being looked into by the party with the objective of addressing it.
He cited Borno, where the party members alleged that they only occupied grade “C?? position in the federal cabinet.
