Although the World? Bank says? poverty is? on the? decline, more than one billion people the world over? are now? facing? difficulties regarding? socio economic sectors. Many people? especially in African countries require health care, food, clothing, education for the less priviledged? and shelter.This situation calls for ?help from?? governments and non governmental organizations?? to provide?? basic necessities of life such as water, shelter? and education for the less priviledged. Fortunately many governmental and non governmental organizations have taken up the challenge? to offer help to the needy. All such organizations religious and? non religious bodies share similar? objectives and? inpirations? to give to the needy. One of such organizations that is in the forefront of providing support for large number of people throuout africa is DIRECT AID

Direct Aid is a humanitarian organization founded in Kuwait 33 years ago and? is active in 31? countries throughout Africa. In addition to providing emergency aid to victims of violent conflict and natural disaster, it drills wells, sponsors orphans, conducts medical clinics, and supports education at all levels. Other initiatives include vocational training, agricultural cooperatives, and handicrafts production centers.? Direct aid also establishes mosques and community centers and distributes Islamic publications; a radio station broadcasts educational programs in 10 languages. Founded in 1981, the Africa Muslim Agency is funded primarily by Kuwaiti aid (especially via Direct Aid International) and dawah donations from Muslims.

 

REPORT ON DIRECT AID IN GHANA IN 2013

The organization provides healthcare for the underprivileged in some parts of Ghana. It also provides water in the drought stricken parts of the country through the drilling of boreholes and hand dug wells. Direct Aid also supports micro economic projects for widows and the vulnerable people in the country.

SUCCESS STORY

During the 2013 fiscal year the organization was able to achieve its core social responsibilities by extending help to the needy in the society over and above the previous years. Apart from its achievement towards providing help in the societies it also raised upwards the service conditions of its hardworking staffs.

SOCIAL PROTECTION

Direct Aid has its headquarters in the Gulf state of Kuwait. Since its establishment the concern of its founders has been to extend their helping hand to the poor and needy such as orphans, vulnerable children and the underprivileged in the society. To this end the organization has been paying school fees, shelter, clothing, health care and other basic materials or service for the needy children.

MAJOR SOCIAL ASSISTANCE

BOARDING SCHOOLS

The agency has four social development centers across the country at Adenta in the Greater Accra Region, Kumasi in Ashanti Region, Cape Coast in Central region and the Tamale in Northern Region. The centers provide full accommodation for some 746 boarding students. They are allowed to go and stay with their extended families and foster parents during holidays

EDUCATION SECTOR INCLUDES: we engage in the following :

  • Construction of schools
  • Sponsorship(? mainly education)
  • Teachers training
  • Feeding program in our schools
  • Vocational schools

 

TAMALE AND ADENTA MERCY SCHOOLS

Direct aid constructed two senior high schools in the country during the fiscal year of 2013 in Adenta and Tamale. The projects have two secondary schools and those schools have 369 boarding students and 120 regular students from the surrounding communities enrolled for 2012/2013 year.

SPONSORSHIP

On education, Direct Aid has provided support geared towards the overall mental, physical, social and psychological growth and development of our students. This is meant to widen their horizons through formal secular education. To this end, the organization has provided sponsorship to some students who took part in national examinations organized by the West Africa Examination Council to be able to pursue higher education. Currently 60 students who have passed their examinations at senior secondary level have been chosen and sponsored to benefit from this scheme in our nation?s tertiary institutions

FURTHER TRAINING FOR TEACHERS

In the year 2013 a total number of 30 teachers from all our schools were trained in a short course under the theme: ?Quality Education and Evaluation? to upgrade their performance as well as to address the country?s transformation plan

FEEDING PROGRAM

As part of its social responsibility, Direct Aid has introduced school feeding program at its own school in Tamale for the year ended 2013. An amount of Ghc59, 280.00 was expended on the program

VOCATIONAL INSTITUTE

The organization has established a vocational training institute at Ayensudoh, Elmina in the Central Region in order to train the youth in dress making /fashion designing and carpentry work. The organization also has on the drawing board electrical training to the vocational curriculum

HEALTH SECTOR

Kuwait Clinic

A health center known as the Kuwait Clinic has been established in Madina to provide health services to the immediate surrounding communities and beyond. Apart from providing daily healthcare, the clinic has been providing outreach programs in four regions of the country.? During this program?? beneficiaries in the communities are immunized against some diseases in a ?medical caravan? program.

WATER PROJECTS

The main objective of the water project is to provide safe and adequate water to the targeted communities

DEEP BOREHOLES

During the year ended 2013, the Direct Aid constructed three (3) blocks of Senior High Schools in the Northern Region ( Tamale) and the Greater Accra Region (Adenta) and eight (8) Mosques in? Ashanti, Upper West and Eastern Regions respectively.

Besides this project, Direct Aid successfully renovated two orphanage centers

SEASONAL PROJECTS

 

During the Ramadan fasting month and festivities of last year 2013, the Direct Aid distributed a quantity of? food items to the needy societies across the country. About 670 needy families benefited from this project, 50 out of 670 needy families selected in collaboration with the Department of Social Welfare were given extra treatments.

During The Idul Adha celebrations Direct Aid also distributed 100 bulls to support institutions and individuals. A total amount of 351,942.90 Ghana cedis was used to implement the project.

SELF RELIANCE/ BUSINESS SUPPORT

As part of the organization?s program to assist the needy in the society, Ghc10, 000 was shared to 20 people to embark on small business ventures. Each of them was given a startup capital grant of Ghc500 Ghana cedis

Apart from this 60 other people were assisted to embark on self- reliance projects in the communities

In the year 2013 under review, Direct Aid paid substantial amount of tax to the government through the Ghana revenue service in respect of its staff and other expenditure and purchases on the market

TAX EXEMPTION

On behalf of the leadership and staff of Direct Aid, we wish to commend the government for the tax exemption extended to the organization in respect of school material donations from our principals in Kuwait. Direct Aid would like to thank the Ministries of Gender Children and Social Protection, Education and Finance for their co-operation and assistance. We appeal to the government to do more to enable us import more educational materials and other items to support our social work

 

Direct Aid utilized GHc115, 693 Ghana cedis on administration and supporting staff in all the centers to engage in follow ups and monitoring and evaluation of projects.

BUDGET AND EXPENDITURE for 2013

In the year 2013 under review Direct Aid expended Ghc 3,462,197.57 on Construction, Education, Social Sector, Administration, Health and Seasonal Grants, against the budget of Ghc 3,812,349.59.

BUDGET FOR 2014

The organization proposes to spend Ghc5, 341,518 in 2014

CONCLUSION

In conclusion Direct Aid performed creditably well in the year 2013 as compared to 2012 financial year. It hoped that the budget for 2014 would be achieved.
