Dissolve Parliament Appointment Committee With Immediate Effect

Defence Network for Democracy (DEFNED) has closely followed the unresolved mysterious bribery allegation publicly leveled by Hon Mahama Ayariga the member of parliament for Bawku Central against Ghana’s current Parliamentary Appointment Committee and Mr Boakye Agyarko the then Minister of Energy-designate who is now the substantive Minister of said portfolio to the effect that, cash the sum of GH 3000 .00 was offered to each member of the Appointment Committee to facilitate the confirmation of appointment of the embattled nominee.

Meanwhile, DEFNED upon its thorough and inductive analysis of the whole bribery allegation leveled against the Appointment Committee and the then embattled Energy Minister-designate by the Hon. Member of Parliament who is also serving on the said Committee revealed that, a prima facie case could be possibly established if an Independent Committee of Inquiry is duly constituted consisting of persons of integrity and high repute from among members of civil society organizations and faith -based organizations in Ghana in order to help unravel the veracity of this pending mysterious bribery allegation which was publicly disclosed to the Ghanaian people by the whistle blower who serves on the Committee in question.

DEFNED per its deductive analysis at this preliminary stage of the unfolding bribery allegations and counter allegations coupled with the dramatization of the matter in question by the whistle blower backed by four key members of the Appointment Committee who have so far confirmed receiving said amount of money , is a solid corroboration of the prime bribery allegation made by the whistle blower in this matter in entirety, thereby making the matter a more serious one which requires an immediate probe so as to establish the real facts of the matter in question.

DEFNED is hereby respectfully calling on the President of the Republic of Ghana H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo together with the Hon. Speaker of the 7th Parliament of the Republic of Ghana Professor Aaron Michael Ocquaye to as a matter of urgency dissolve the current Appointment Committee which is bedeviled with the pending serious bribery allegation and expeditiously reconstitute a new Appointment Committee to proceed with the vetting of the appointed nominees so as to redeem the hard -won reputation, credibility and integrity of Ghana’s Parliamentary Democracy .

DEFNED is further calling on the Minister of Energy Hon .Boakye Agyarko to immediately resign from office as the Minister of Energy since he is the main subject of the matter in question , so as to enable a fair, impartial and transparent probe administered into the mysterious allegation made against him by the whistle-blower Hon Mahama Ayariga and apparently echoed by four (4) key leading members of the Appointment Committee of the 7th Parliament, who are also now serving as hostile witnesses against the embattled Minister of Energy in the matter. This is because, the main architect of the alleged bribery scandal is the Minister in question ,as such he must honourably resign from office or his appointment is immediately withdrawn by the President of the Republic of Ghana in order to restore total confidence and integrity in the current Akufo -Addo led government.

Meanwhile, any attempt by the current administration to shield the Minster in question will adversely cast a slur on the integrity , sanctity and competence of the government to wage war against corruption and corrupt public officials thereby eroding total public confidence in the new government in entirety. The Ghanaian people are closely and silently waiting and watching the new government in respect of this serious bribery allegation and as such the government acts decisively on the matter without any undue delay .

DEFNED wish to emphatically state with firm conviction that, the pending mysterious bribery allegation if not expeditiously delved into by a competent Committee of Inquiry to establish the veracity of the whole matter in question thereby bringing the whole matter to a logical conclusion , and the failure to institute a full-scale inquiry into the pending mysterious bribery allegation coupled with any form of lackadaisical stance and flimsy excuses by the leadership of the 7th Parliament of Ghana and the Presidency will totally amount to the breach of the social contract the current government signed under oath with the Ghanaian people on 7th January,2017. Hence , any lackadaisical posture in this matter has the greatest propensity to erode the total public confidence and support in the current government in its quest to fight corruption.

This is because ,any breach of the social contract signed under oath by the new government with the Ghanaian people will have a consequential adverse effect on the entire current democratic dispensation for reneging on its core 2016 election manifesto in fighting corruption on the basis of which it captured political power in the 2016 electioneering .
