The CEO of Global Media Foundation, Raphael Godlove Ahenu Jr., who made the call said in 2003, the African Union established the Maputo Protocol to enhance the realization of women?s rights and to address the inequalities and discrimination faced by women.

He said the Maputo Protocol requires member states to permit abortion ?in cases of sexual assault, rape, incest, and where the continued pregnancy endangers the mental and physical health of the mother or the life of the mother or the foetus.

The CEO was speaking during a half-year review of a three-year project title: Advocating for Young People Access to Safe Abortion and Contraceptive Services in Ghana being implemented by GlomeF with support from SAAF at the cost $,127 000.

Mr. Ahenu Jr. however lamented that although 36 of the 54 member states of the African Union have ratified the Maputo Protocol many are yet to take steps to effectively domesticate the treaty into their national-level abortion laws.

According to the CEO, Legal restrictions on abortion do not result in fewer abortions, instead, they increase the chances that women will seek abortion services in unsafe conditions, with attendant risks to their lives and health.

The Human right crusader said the removal of legal restrictions on abortion would help reduce unsafe abortion and will result in reduction rates of maternal mortality across the world especially in Africa.

He also stressed the need to increase men involvement in promoting access to safe abortion and contraceptive services in Africa.

” For us here in Africa, the men have the power for yes to be yes so if we want to win the fight against unsafe abortion in Africa in particular and the world at large men must be in the forefront of the safe abortion campaign”. he said.
