DR Congo urges Rwanda to respect its international commitments

Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) has urged the Rwandan government to respect its international commitments and stop recruiting refugees and all other operations aimed at destabilizing DR Congo and Burundi.

In a letter sent to the UN Security Council which was published on Thursday in Kinshasa, DR Congo ambassador to UN Ignace Gata Mavita urged Rwanda to respect its international commitments and immediately cease engaging in destabilizing activities.

“The Rwandan government has been recruiting Burundian refugees to destabilize Bujumbura and DR Congo,” the letter said, adding that “the Burundian refugees, after undergoing training in Rwanda, enter DR Congo with fake voter’s cards to appear like citizens of this country, then later go to Burundi.”

Elsewhere on Thursday, the president of DR Congo’s National Independent Electoral Commission (CENI) Corneille Nanga condemned the situation when he met representatives of political parties.

He said CENI will start issuing more secure voter’s cards.

On several occasions, Rwanda has rejected allegations that it was training Burundian refugees with the intention of overthrowing the government of President Pierre Nkurunziza. Enditem
