The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has committed to making polling station results available on its website within 21 days following the elections.
This unwavering commitment to transparency and accessibility of electoral data for all stakeholders is a testament to the EC’s dedication to a fair and open electoral process.
Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, the EC’s Director of Training, shared this plan during an interview on TV3 on August 9, 2024.
He emphasized that while the EC is determined to meet this deadline for polling station results, it may also expedite the publication of results at the constituency, regional, and national levels before final declarations.
The EC’s commitment is not just a standalone initiative, but a strategic move that aligns with a recommendation from the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG). This alignment reinforces the EC’s commitment to strengthening Ghana’s democratic processes and improving its democratic rankings.
Prof. Kwesi Jonah, a Senior Research Fellow at IDEG, highlighted the importance of this measure.
He noted that such transparency can prevent potential threats to democracy and address weaknesses in the electoral process.
This step is part of broader efforts to address past criticisms and enhance electoral integrity, as noted in recommendations from European Union observers since 2012.
In addition to publishing polling station results, the EC plans to post all guidelines and procedures related to election irregularities on its website.
This initiative provides clarity and support for those wishing to file petitions or challenge results.
The EC’s proactive approach is a response to past criticisms and a beacon of hope for the future. It is expected to bolster public confidence in the electoral process and ensure greater transparency in Ghana’s democratic practices.
