Samuel Dubik Mahama, Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), disclosed that the company faces a significant challenge with outdated meters.
In an interview with TV3, Mahama revealed that approximately one million meters within the system have become obsolete.
“The current meters are obsolete,” Mahama said, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive replacement plan. He noted that the ECG is actively working on a strategy to upgrade these old meters, which have outlived their usefulness.
In addition to the meter replacement initiative, Mahama addressed the ongoing issue of power theft. Despite efforts to modernize the system, power theft remains a significant concern for the ECG.
“We are consciously moving our clients to a new system, but power theft is still a major issue,” he explained. “We need to close gaps in the system.”
The ECG’s efforts to replace obsolete meters and address power theft are part of a broader strategy to enhance the efficiency and reliability of the country’s power distribution network.
