The Commission of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has expressed deep concern over recent allegations made against Nigeria and other member states, accusing them of sponsoring terrorism.
In a statement issued on December 26, 2024, the Commission reaffirmed its unwavering support for Nigeria and its ECOWAS counterparts.
ECOWAS strongly rejects the accusations, emphasizing that for years, Nigeria has been a key supporter of peace and security, not only in West Africa but across the entire African continent. The Commission highlighted Nigeria’s leadership of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), which has recorded significant successes in combating terrorism and insurgency in the region, underscoring Nigeria’s commitment to peace and security.
The Commission categorically refuted any suggestion that Nigeria, a country known for its substantial contributions to regional stability, could ever be a state sponsor of terrorism.
Furthermore, ECOWAS urged all member states to foster dialogue and maintain stability in the region, cautioning against baseless accusations that lack credible evidence.
The statement, issued from Abuja, Nigeria, reaffirmed ECOWAS’s call for unity and collaboration among member states in ensuring peace and security for the region.
