The Ministry of Education (MoE) has been unable to retrieve a stolen Toyota Hilux vehicle, taken at gunpoint from Kingsley Agyemang, Central Regional Coordinator of the Free Senior High School Secretariat, in 2018.
MoE officials, in a display of transparency, confirmed during a Public Accounts Committee meeting that the incident occurred while Agyemang was returning to Kumasi from a funeral.
Emmanuel Agyare, MoE’s transport manager, reported that despite filing a police report and an investigation, the vehicle is yet to be discovered. However, the Ministry is actively pursuing all avenues for its recovery.
“The vehicle was assigned to the Central Regional Coordinator of Free SHS and taken to Kumasi Kwadaso,” stated Agyare. The driver was unharmed and reported the incident to the police.
The Public Accounts Committee has played a significant role in this case. They have directed that Agyemang reimburse the Ministry for the difference between the insured value of the vehicle and its current market worth, pending compensation from the insurance company.
Emmanuel Agyare, MoE’s transport manager, assured that the Ministry will persist in its pursuit of the state insurance company for compensation. He added that once received, Mr Kingsley Agyemang will be responsible for covering the remaining cost not covered by the insurance payment.
The Ministry’s efforts to recover the vehicle underscore ongoing challenges in managing state assets and security concerns for officials in their line of duty.
