Reverend Stephen Wengam, General Superintendent of the Assemblies of God, Ghana, has called on church members and Ghanaians to avoid actions that could jeopardise the country’s democracy and peace as the 2024 general elections draw near.

His appeal came during the church’s 31st Biennial General Council meeting, held at the CK Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences (CKT-UTAS) in Navrongo, Upper East Region.

Reverend Wengam underscored the importance of maintaining the democratic process and urged congregants to act as peacemakers within their communities. He emphasised that preserving Ghana’s peaceful environment is crucial for the democratic process to function effectively.

The Assemblies of God church, which was founded in Yendi 93 years ago, is currently in a transformative phase.

Reverend Wengam outlined the church’s new agenda, which includes reaching every community in Ghana with the Gospel message, enhancing pastoral training, and investing in infrastructure development.

This strategic shift will broaden the church’s impact within Ghana and neighbouring countries.

“Our current membership stands at 715,000 in Ghana, with 20 million across Africa and 85 million globally,” Reverend Wengam noted. “The Assemblies of God is well-positioned to impact communities throughout the nation significantly.”

He also highlighted the church’s efforts to attract younger and middle-class members, noting recent achievements in education and social development. The church has established 364 primary schools in Ghana and plans to expand educational opportunities in underserved areas through its NGO, AG Care.

AG Care focuses on livelihood empowerment, vocational skills training, access to quality education through child sponsorship and business school support, and health services, emphasising preventive and curative care.
