The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana anticipates enlisting between 50,000 to 70,000 new voters during its upcoming mop-up voter registration exercise, scheduled to run from Thursday, August 1 to Saturday, August 3, 2024.

Mr Samuel Tettey, Deputy Chairman of the EC in charge of Operations, announced the initiative at a press conference in Accra, outlining that the three-day exercise aims to accommodate individuals who turned 18 after the recent limited voter registration period and those who missed previous registration opportunities.

The EC has designated 268 District Offices, 26 Public Universities, and 41 Prison Centers nationwide as registration centres. Operations will commence daily from 0700 to 1800 hours.

Emphasizing online registration, Mr. Tettey noted the EC’s collaboration with Mobile Telecommunication Network (MTN) to ensure reliable internet connectivity throughout the exercise.

During the preceding Limited Voter Registration Exercise from May 7 to 29, 2024, the EC registered 778,447 new voters. This figure comprises 408,332 females and 370,115 males, contributing to a provisional total of 18,681,366 registered voters.

Mr Tettey underscored the mop-up exercise’s role in achieving an inclusive voter register for the 2024 General Election. Eligible applicants must present a Ghana Card or Ghana Passport at registration centres.

Alternatively, two registered voters can vouch for an applicant under specified conditions.

He urged political parties to deploy trained agents to oversee the process professionally, ensuring a peaceful and orderly registration. Security measures will be implemented at all centres to maintain a safe environment.

The EC has scheduled the exhibition of the Voters Register from August 20 to 27, 2024, at all polling stations nationwide, encouraging registered voters to verify their details during this period.
