Emma Sallah, a passionate advocate for children with intellectual disabilities, has dedicated her life to improving the lives of those who are often overlooked.
As the founder of the Anlo Special School in Keta, Emma has built a sanctuary for children with autism, Down syndrome, and other intellectual disabilities.
Her selfless work is making an indelible mark on the community and has earned her a nomination for MTN Heroes of Change Season 7.
A Journey Rooted in Empathy
Emma’s journey into the world of special education began in 2012 at the Autism Awareness Care Center in Kokomlemle. There, she witnessed firsthand the struggles and challenges faced by children with intellectual disabilities.
Emma, moved by a deep sense of empathy and responsibility, worked on fundraising and awareness initiatives to promote inclusion and provide resources for these children.
After the passing of her mother, Emma relocated to Keta, a town on the southern coast of Ghana. It was during her time there that she observed the glaring gap in educational opportunities for children with disabilities.
Despite the challenges, including limited resources and accessibility issues, Emma felt compelled to make a change.
“It was my dream to help children, and I believe we are all called to improve the world in some way. I decided to act,” Emma explains, recalling the moment she decided to take action.
A School for the Forgotten
In October 2018, Emma founded the Anlo Special School, a facility that caters specifically to children with intellectual disabilities.
The school operates as a day center, providing a nurturing environment where children can thrive, learn, and develop skills that will benefit them for a lifetime.
Offering free snacks and lunch, Emma ensures that the children have what they need to grow, without the financial burden often placed on parents.
The school operates on donations, Emma’s personal savings, and proceeds from a seashell art project started by the community.
The school focuses on building a strong educational foundation for its students, offering programs that address not only their intellectual needs but also their emotional and social development.
“The goal is not just education, but empowering these children to live fulfilling lives,” Emma says with conviction. “They need opportunities, and that’s exactly what we’re trying to provide.”
Impacting Lives One Child at a Time
The impact of Emma’s work has been transformative for both the children and their families. One notable success story is a young boy who initially struggled to communicate but, over time, has learned to speak and interact with others.
His improvement was so remarkable that the local chief granted Emma land to build a permanent school building, acknowledging the positive change she was bringing to the community.
Emma’s students have also been given the chance to compete in a national competition for children with disabilities, helping them build confidence and connect with peers from other parts of the country. These experiences have proven invaluable, allowing children to grow in their self-awareness and social skills.
Additionally, Emma has been involved in multiple community outreach programs, including organizing health screening events, where Persons with Disability receive free medication and health resources, as well as mosquito repellents for malaria prevention.
Overcoming Challenges and Obstacles
While Emma’s efforts have had a significant impact, she faces numerous challenges, including funding limitations and accessibility issues.
The school is currently operating out of Emma’s porch, and while the impact has been profound, the lack of a dedicated space has restricted the school’s growth.
Emma also encounters societal stigma, with some members of the community holding negative perceptions about working with children with disabilities.
Despite these challenges, Emma remains focused on her mission to provide education, support, and hope for children who would otherwise be left behind.
“I face many obstacles, but my love for the children and my commitment to this cause keeps me going,” Emma says with determination.
Building a Legacy of Change
Looking to the future, Emma has ambitious plans for the school. She hopes to expand the facility, enroll more children, and provide them with the resources they need to succeed.
In particular, Emma hopes to establish a fully equipped school that can accommodate the growing number of children in need of special education in the region.
One of Emma’s most significant aspirations is to continue providing educational opportunities for children with intellectual disabilities across Ghana, ensuring that they too can lead lives of dignity and independence. “I want to build a facility that is a beacon of hope for families who feel like their children are overlooked,” she says.
A Community of Support
Emma’s work has garnered admiration from all corners of the Keta community. Local leaders, including James Ocloo Akorli, the Assemblyman for Keta, have lauded her commitment. “Emma is a role model,” says Akorli.
“She could be doing anything else, but she chose to dedicate herself to these children. She deserves to be recognized for her extraordinary work.”
Parents like Akpene Adzikah, whose son has flourished at the school, are equally appreciative. “My son was so difficult to handle before Emma intervened,” she says. “Now, he can express himself and is much more engaged with the world around him. Emma has truly changed our lives.”
Recognition and Empowerment
Through her tireless work, Emma Sallah has proven that one person can make a difference in the lives of many. Her commitment to children with intellectual disabilities is not just a job—it’s a calling.
Her work exemplifies the essence of the MTN Heroes of Change program, which recognizes individuals who are transforming their communities through service, dedication, and compassion.
As Emma continues to serve the children of Keta, she embodies the values of hope, resilience, and determination. Her passion for making a positive impact on society is unwavering, and her work will continue to inspire generations to come.
Emma Sallah’s journey is far from over, and with the support of the MTN Heroes of Change initiative, her dream of creating a brighter future for children with intellectual disabilities is closer to becoming a reality.
