“It has been a declared position of the government of Ethiopia to respond to provocations in a proportionate manner,” Ethiopian Government Communication Affairs Office Minister Getachew Reda told journalists in Addis Ababa.
“We have always been consistent that we would not respond to just every minor provocation that the regime (Eritrean regime) often carries out,” he said.
“It has been sending all kinds of terrorist elements to Ethiopia conducting all kinds of destabilizing missions, and we have been taking proportional measures all along.”
The Ethiopian government earlier said in a statement that its defense forces have taken proportional action against Eritrean forces after Eritrea attempted an attack against Ethiopia at Tsorena front Sunday.
The proportional attack against Eritrean forces seriously weakened the attacking capacity of the Eritrean forces, according to the statement.
“The extent of the damage they have suffered will hopefully make them think twice, but, as always, we cannot really sure whether the regime in Asmara will take this lesson to heart. But we can only hope that this time around they will understand,” said the minister.
Reda said the Ethiopian Forces have returned to their barracks after the mission, adding that what will happen next “depends on what Asmara decides to do next.” Enditem
