Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has vowed to completely defeat the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF), an armed rebel group accused of killing hundreds of civilians in the country’s Oromia region.

Ahmed said late Monday that the Ethiopian National Defense Forces will step up their campaign against the OLF, which the government calls it Shane, to exterminate it from Wellega, western Ethiopia, which is considered a strong base for the rebel group.

“We will pursue and wipe out the OLF group forever with joint efforts of our people,” Ahmed said in a Twitter message, claiming members of the rebel force are on the run as the government security forces intensify a counter offensive.

Ahmed also disclosed that the rebel group continues to attack civilians in west Wellega in the Oromia region while fleeing the “hard blow” by the Ethiopian National Defense Forces.

“The rebel force massacre civilians in Qellem Wellega zone in Oromia region while retreating,” he said.

In a recent statement, the government announced that the rebel militants killed 338 civilians in the latest string of massacres in Tole locality, Gimbi district of Wollega. The massacre was said to be one of the deadliest.

“We feel sad for the lives lost and sufferings our people have undergone,” said Ahmed, stating that the government is undertaking a massive counter attack against the rebel group.

The Ethiopian parliament had designated the OLA as a “terrorist group” in May 2021.

Meanwhile, Ethiopian PM held discussion for the first time with members of the Ethiopian National Dialogue Commission, which is in charge of mediating all conflicting parties in the East African Nation.

Ahmed on the occasion expressed his government’s commitment to independent and inclusive dialogue and to discuss any agenda that might be raised by warring forces. Enditem
