The Week is in commemoration of the 1950 Schuman Declaration – the birth of the idea of the European Union, also known as Europe Day which falls on 9 May.

This year, the theme for the celebration in Ghana is “Ghana – EU: Partnership in Action”.

A wide range of events, including free access to original European and Ghanaian film screenings, to illustrate different dimensions of the EU partnership with Ghana, as well as events to reach out to people will be carried out.

Today the EU is Ghana’s most important trading partner; the biggest source of Foreign Direct Investment, and provides over half of Ghana’s official development assistance. The EU has been supporting Ghana to improve the quality of drinking water, improve maternal health; to build roads; to manage natural resources like timber, and to develop trade. The EU also supports regional cooperation in West Africa, focussing on peace and security, and has been working to addressing climate change.

Europe Week in Ghana 2016 will raise awareness of the Ghana-EU Partnership in Action through the exhibition of projects by partner Agencies. Today Europe and Ghana are more and more connected, and the vision of Robert Schuman, that” integration would lead not only to peace, but also to prosperity for all”, is as relevant as ever.
