Ex-President Kufuor Still Without Official Residence

Eight years after former President J.A Kufuor left office, he is yet to be offered his “retirement home”, according to his spokesperson Frank Agyekum.

Kufuor finished serving his term in January 2009. He only has an official office at Cantonments in Accra.

Kufuor and his counterpart JJ Rawlings rejected houses assigned to them at Trasacco in Accra due to the fact that they were not consulted before the buildings were constructed during the Mills administration.

Speaking to Asempa FM on Monday, Mr. Agyekum said his boss opted for a bungalow at Cantonments to be used as an office and another as his residency, but the then administration rejected it.

Ever since he has been using his Airport West home as his official residence contrary to what was stipulated in the Presidential Committee on Emoluments report.

Mr. Agyekum noted ex-President Rawlings was later allowed to make a preference for his residential accommodation and office at Ridge, hence his boss deserves similar treatment.

Mr. Agyekum’s assertion follows the controversy surrounding former President John Mahama’s official residency. Mahama wants to keep occupying his current official residence as part of his retirement package, however, government officials are kicking against it, arguing it must be used by the current vice president Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
