The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has disclosed that four teachers were apprehended for involvement in examination malpractices during the ongoing Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in Bekwai, Ashanti Region.
Despite warnings against malpractice from stakeholders, including President Akufo-Addo, the BECE commenced nationwide on Monday, July 8.
Wendy Addy-Lamptey, Head of the National Office at WAEC, emphasized the need for discipline among students and urged stakeholders to reinforce integrity in examinations. She reported incidents of malpractice, explicitly noting the involvement of teachers in Obuasi-Bekwai.
“We’ve had good conduct overall, but there have been isolated incidents. In Obuasi-Bekwai, we have had reports of several teachers assisting candidates during the examination,” she stated.
WAEC is currently gathering details on the incidents before releasing further information.
