Expert calls for mechanization of Kenya’s agriculture to boost food security

An expert on Friday called for mechanization of Kenya’s agricultural sector in order to boost its food security.

George Marechera, business development manager at African Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF), told Xinhua in Nairobi that use of manual means for land preparation, planting and harvesting leads to low agricultural productivity.

“Kenya should embrace mechanization because it results to intensification of agriculture which reduces the cost of production and enhances competitiveness of agricultural produce,” Marechera said.

He observed that Kenya is a net food importer, as farmers are not able to produce enough food to feed the nation.

He noted that the bulk of food is produced by small scale farmers who engaged in subsistence farming.

He said that mechanization of the production cycle, especially by small holder farmers, will also help to attract youth into farming as they will able to grow crops while they engage in other economic activities.

According to AATF, use of modern technology in agriculture has numerous advantages including reduction of time required to plant, weed and harvest such that farmers invest less and get more output per unit area.

Marechera said that mechanization will help Kenya to maximize its land and human resources in the agricultural sector.

Marechera said that use of modern tools could help to revolutionize the production of labor intensive crops, such as cassava, which is critical crop because it is a drought tolerant crop. Enditem
