To cater to the growing number of mobile web users
Facebook has launched a new, faster app for iPads and iPhones. Mick Johnson, mobile product manager at Facebook, stated that programmers removed some lesser-used features, such as a way to view the app horizontally, to help speed up its performance.
Mobile has become Facebook’s top priority, since people have been accessing the social networking site using mobile apps more than desktops and laptops.
The apps are part of what Facebook calls a transformation into a “mobile first” company.
“We have basically retooled and focused the company around mobile. It has been a huge change,” said Mike Schroepfer, vice president of engineering of Facebook.
To boost its growth in the mobile space, Facebook has also re-arranged its product teams, to ensure that the company now makes mobile versions of new features at the same time that they are developed for the main website.
