The events form part of the Ministry’s 20th anniversary festivity dubbed: “Enjoy your Marriage Weekend,” that is designed to be a blessing for participating couples as it seeks to bolster new and decades old relationships.
Activities would include lecture on topics such as: Positive Family Values for Healthier Marriage, Fulfilling Romantic Love, and Emerging Issues in Christian Marriage.
“The point we have emphasised again and again is that God designed marriage to be a blessing, to be enjoyed and not to be endured,” Rev Godfried Bamfo, a Director at Family Impact Ghana, said at a cake cutting ceremony at the weekend.
“We are committed to work towards the establishment of the supremacy of the word of God in marriage and all relationships,” he said.
Professor Kobina Nkyeker, Associate Professor at the University of Ghana School of Medicine and Dentistry, said the clamour for material wealth and unbridled use of technology were largely responsible for many wrecked and abortive marriages.
“We have low level of morality, the issue of commitment that characterises family life and marriage is lacking, we are now interested in material things, materials things can let marriages apart,” he said.
“Technology is certainly very useful but if we don’t take care it can pose challenges to the marriage and family life, we spend more time on technology than personal interaction that foster family togetherness,” he said.
Prof. Nkyekyer said the world today did not want to hear moral values like faithfulness, respect, discipline, or doing things right which triggered several marital disputes and family conflicts as well as failed relationships.
He urged parents to be mindful of their responsibility of inculcating moral values like discipline, faithfulness and honesty into their children and also live exemplary lives for the children to emulate.
“We constantly have to tell ourselves, I need to be the example that I am propounding, we have the responsibility to counter negative values,” he said.
He condemned same-sex marriage as alien to Ghanaian cultural setting and undermining the foundation of the family which is built on “faithfulness and commitment.”
Books promising to save or reinvigorate marriages would be made available to participating and would-be couples during the “Enjoy Your Marriage Weekend” expected to take place at the Ghana Registered Nurses Association new hostel in September.
Family Impact Ghana runs several programmes including marriage enrichment sessions, pre-marriage counselling, positive parenting seminars for care-givers and marriage counselling certificate training courses.
